Everything You Need to Know To Plan Your Family Cruise on Independence of the Seas from Galveston

Independence of the Seas will be headed to Galveston this summer to complete 7 night Western Caribbean sailings starting August 15, 2021!

Independence will be calling on ports in:

  • Roatan, Honduras

  • Puerto Costa Maya, Mexico

  • Cozumel, Mexico

  • George Town, Grand Cayman

  • Falmouth, Jamaica

For those sailing on Indy out of Galveston, you’re in for a treat. This is an amazing ship! I say that not only because I was lucky enough to cruise in the Owner’s Suite for my honeymoon, but because this ship was treated to the full Royal Amplification facelift in May 2018. Not sure what Amplification means? Here’s an explanation.

Indy has everything you need for family adventure. From SkyPad (check out the video of the installation below!) to an expanded and upgraded Splashaway Bay, there is something for everyone.

Indy has everything to meet the needs of families including Royal Babies and Tots (at an additional hourly charge) for little ones ages 6-36 months. The nursery typically charges around $6 during daytime hours and increases to $8 an hours in the evening. They’re open until midnight or until the last child of the night leaves. You can book a set number of hours on embarkation day (usually around 16 but can vary by ship and sailing) and then can add more hours if needed on the third day. Only one formal night is allowed to be booked on the first day for childcare, but check back as that usually opens up. Indy also has a dedicated area within Splashaway Bay for diapered kiddos. (These are all precovid practices as we have yet to see EXACTLY how childcare will be impacted but will hopefully know more soon.)

Looking for a Stateroom to book? Check out some of these UNICORN CABINS that are great for families. Unicorn Cabins are those that can be tricky to find and even harder to find information about online.

FREEDOM CLASS SHIP UNICORNS: Freedom of the Seas, Independence of the seas, and Liberty of the seas

  • Forward cabin 8200 1K ultra spacious Family ocean view feels like a full two bedroom because instead of a curtain to the bunk beds they have an actual door and the Royal king bed is in an entirely different room blocked off with a curtain then there’s a small living room so it feels like a 2 bedroom suite.

  • Forward cabins 9218/9220 and 9518/9520 both connect with they are 3M (ocean view) and 3B( ocean view balcony) categories. These connecting cabins are great for families with 6-8 ppl including those with littles. The balcony cabin connects to the ocean view cabin via interior doors making it a perfect family configuration without worrying about the young ones possibly opening the balcony doors and the adults not giving up the balcony life. Must book 3 minimum in each cabin to book together. Another similar configuration to 9218/9220 are 9676/9881 & 9376&9381. These connecting configurations are located in the aft of the ships and they are categories 4V ( Interior) and 4B (ocean view balconies) they can sleep maximum of 4 total maybe 5 if approval with a pack and play for babies under 3. This is another perfect option for those with littles that don’t want them to have access to a balcony while sleeping in the connecting cabin. These also connect inside the cabins maximum 2 per cabin to book cabins together.

  • One particular forward facing 1L PANORAMIC OCEAN VIEW is cabin number 1864. It feels like you’re in the VP ocean panoramic suite room without the suite price. But it can only sleep 4 and doesn’t have the bunk beds like the VP but the views are amazing. If you aren’t familiar with Panoramic Ocean View room I HIGHLY recommend them with kiddos. You don’t have a balcony but the sweeping views from the floor to ceiling windows will keep kids, and adults, mesmerized!

And YES! Independence of the Seas has the awesome Luckey Climbers that will keep your kiddos entertained, as my four year old says, “for AGES!”
